WEATHERS, WESLEY W., AND FRED N. WHITE. Physiological thermoregulafion in turtles. Am. J. Physiol. 22 l(3) : 704-7 10. 17 I. .The physiological capacity of turtles for altering rates of heat exchange was partially assessed by measuring rates of change of body temperature (Tb) during heating from 10 C to 30 C, and during cooling from 30 C to 10 C, in both air and water. In water, turtles heated an average of 2517~ faster than they cooled while in air the aquatic species studied exhibited rates of cooling which exceeded rates of heating. The latter observation was attributed to the influence of evaporative water loss. Heart rates showed a strong dependency upon respiration and no clear correlation of heart rate with differences between rates of heating or cooling could be demonstrated. Both cutaneous and carapace blood flows increased in response to heating and decreased in response to cooling (133Xe-clearance technique). These changes were independent of changes in heart rate or Tb . Peripheral vascular responses to heating and cooling appear to represent a means of changing functional insulation and may contribute to the thermoregulatory capacities of turtles under natural conditions.

Regional blood flow in sea turtles: implications for heat exchange in an aquatic ectotherm.
Despite substantial knowledge on thermoregulation in reptiles, the mechanisms involved in heat exchange of sea turtles have not been investigated in detail. We studied blood flow in the front flippers of two green turtles, Chelonia mydas, and four loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, using Doppler ultrasound to assess the importance of regional blood flow in temperature regulation. Mean blood f...
متن کاملBody temperature stability achieved by the large body mass of sea turtles.
To investigate the thermal characteristics of large reptiles living in water, temperature data were continuously recorded from 16 free-ranging loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, during internesting periods using data loggers. Core body temperatures were 0.7-1.7°C higher than ambient water temperatures and were kept relatively constant. Unsteady numerical simulations using a spherical thermody...
متن کاملBehaviour and Physiology: The Thermal Strategy of Leatherback Turtles
BACKGROUND Adult leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) exhibit thermal gradients between their bodies and the environment of ≥8°C in sub-polar waters and ≤4°C in the tropics. There has been no direct evidence for thermoregulation in leatherbacks although modelling and morphological studies have given an indication of how thermoregulation may be achieved. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We...
متن کاملBehaviour of leatherback sea turtles, Dermochelys coriacea, during the migratory cycle.
Leatherback sea turtles, Dermochelys coriacea, undertake broad oceanic movements. While satellite telemetry has been used to investigate the post-nesting behaviour of female turtles tagged on tropical nesting beaches, long-term behavioural patterns of turtles of different sexes and sizes have not been described. Here we investigate behaviour for 25 subadult and adult male and female turtles sat...
متن کاملThe role of infrequent and extraordinary deep dives in leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea).
Infrequent and exceptional behaviours can provide insight into the ecology and physiology of a particular species. Here we examined extraordinarily deep (300-1250 m) and protracted (>1h) dives made by critically endangered leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) in the context of three previously suggested hypotheses: predator evasion, thermoregulation and exploration for gelatinous prey. Da...
